Most of my pupils will study for grades; this gives the lessons and practice sessions focus and is a good barometer of improvement. All of the syllabuses I teach provide UCAS points for grades 6,7 & 8. Here is a brief description of the syllabuses:
Rockschool:
This increasingly popular syllabus focuses mainly on the electric guitar, and is chosen by the majority of my pupils. They play along to a backing track (CD provided with the book) and starting with simple but great songs, they build their confidence and knowledge of the electric guitar. Please see www.rslawards.com for more details.
Trinity Rock and Pop:
This syllabus can be played on electric or acoustic guitar and again is played along to a backing track. All the songs in these grades are famous songs so pupils can chose their favourites and learn songs that are familiar to them. This syllabus is another popular choice among my pupils and will provide them with excellent knowledge of the guitar and how it's played whilst being really good fun. Please see www.trinityrock.com for more details.
ABRSM:
This is a more traditional exam board and is played entirely on a classical/Spanish guitar without a backing track. The main focus is on a fingerpicking style of guitar and provides pupils with valuable knowledge of reading sheet music - something that is very important if they want to play multiple instruments. Please see www.abrsm.org for more details.
Exam Info:
All the above syllabuses have their exams in March, July or November - I will of course make sure pupils are entered for their exams at the appropriate times. The exam venues are as follows:
Rockschool - Gatehouse Studios, Kembrey Park, Swindon
Trinity - Pegasus Brass Band Hall, Ermin Street, Swindon
ABRSM - Community Hall, Market Lavington, Devizes
